Our GOV.UK listing

We're on the GOV.UK list of software that can send waste records to DEFRA. This page shows you how to check that, and what the listing does and doesn't mean.

Last updated 15 October 2026

What the listing says about us

DEFRA (the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) publishes a page on GOV.UK called Report receipt of waste: choose a software provider. It lists software that can upload a waste site’s records to the report receipt of waste service. That’s the part of Digital Waste Tracking (DEFRA’s online system for recording waste) that covers what a site takes in. We were added on 8 September.

Being on it means our software is connected to that service. That’s what the list records. It isn’t an endorsement of CarrierNote. DEFRA doesn’t endorse the providers it lists, and its terms for software providers don’t let any of us claim it does.

Permitted and licensed sites in England and Wales have to report the waste they take in to that service from October 2026, and sites in Scotland and Northern Ireland from January 2027. Software is one way to do it, not the only one.

How to check it

Open the list on GOV.UK and find the row with Red Tape Software Limited in the Provider column and Carriernote.co.uk in the Product column.

Where DEFRA’s tests come in

DEFRA also publishes tests for software like ours. They put sample records through it, including ones with details missing, and check that each one comes out the way DEFRA expects. DEFRA doesn’t mark anyone’s results. Each provider runs the tests and checks its own, and the list doesn’t tell you how anyone did.

We publish ours, scenario by scenario, on our DEFRA test results page, and run them again every time we change the software.

What the listing doesn’t mean

It isn’t a ranking. The list says nothing about which software is better.

The risk stays with you. GOV.UK says buying software is at your own risk, and that DEFRA isn’t liable for problems that come from using it.

It isn’t the only software you can use. DEFRA says the list isn’t exhaustive, and a site can use other software that connects to the same service.

And it only covers sites that take waste in. Carriers, brokers, dealers, and exporters come in from October 2027, and DEFRA hasn’t yet said how it will list software for them. Every date is on our key dates page.

In short

We’re on GOV.UK’s list of software connected to DEFRA’s service, and you can see our row there yourself. Our test results are on a page of their own. Which software you use is still your choice.
