Put it on your phone in a few taps
Add to Home Screen is a button in your phone's browser menu that puts a website on your home screen as its own icon. You do it once on each phone.
Start on the phone you want it on, and open CarrierNote in its browser.
These steps are for Safari, the browser that comes with an iPhone. Other iPhone browsers can add it too, from their own Share menu.
- Open CarrierNote in Safari. If the link opened inside another app, such as your email, use that app's option to open it in the browser first.
- Open the Share menu. If you can’t see the Share button, it’s in the browser menu. Tap the three dots in the corner of the screen, then Share.
- Tap View More, then Add to Home Screen. View More is at the end of the bottom row of the Share menu.
- Leave the Open as Web App switch on, and tap Add. The CarrierNote icon appears on your home screen.
- From now on, open it from the icon rather than from Safari. It opens full screen, like any other app. Sign in there if it asks you to.
These steps are for Chrome. Samsung Internet and Firefox can add it too, though the option sits in a different place and may be worded differently.
- Open CarrierNote in Chrome. If the link opened inside another app, such as your email, use that app's option to open it in the browser first.
- Tap the three dots, then “Install and create shortcut”. The three dots are Chrome’s menu, at the top right of the screen.
- In the panel that slides up from the bottom, tap “Install”.
- Tap “Install” again in the “Install app” box. Chrome takes a few seconds to install it.
- When the “CarrierNote App installed” message appears at the top of the screen, tap it. The app opens full screen. Sign in there if it asks you to.
What it does on a phone
Works with no signal
A note made in a basement or a dead spot waits on the phone and uploads once the phone reconnects.
Uses the phone's camera
Take a photo of the load with the phone's camera and it goes on the note.
Signed on the screen
Whoever hands the waste over signs on the phone with a finger.
Updates itself
There's no store update to install and nothing for anyone to remember.
An alert when we reply to your support request
The mobile app can put an alert on your phone when we reply to a support request you raised, so you don’t have to keep checking. The email still arrives as well, and the reply itself stays in the app.
Alerts are off until you turn them on, and you turn them on for each phone or computer separately. In the app, go to Account and tap “Turn on alerts” under “Alerts on this device”. Or, straight after you raise a support request, tap “Alert me” when the app offers it. Your phone or browser then asks for permission, and you tap Allow.
On an iPhone, alerts only work in the mobile app, once you’ve added it to your Home Screen and opened it from there. They don’t work in a browser tab.
You get one alert for each support request until you open that request in the app. Where the phone supports it, the app’s icon also shows how many support requests have an alert you haven’t opened yet.
An alert never says what the reply says, because it can show on a locked screen. Its heading is “We’ve replied”, and the line under it reads “Open CarrierNote to read our reply.” What we store to send alerts is in our privacy notice.
You can turn alerts off in the app at any time, from Account. “Turn off on this device” stops them on the device you’re using, and “Turn off on all devices” stops them everywhere at once, which is handy if a phone goes missing.
When the install doesn't go to plan
- There's no Add to Home Screen option
- On an iPhone, it's under View More in Safari's Share menu. If it isn't there either, the link has probably opened inside another app's browser, such as your email or a messaging app. Those browsers often can't add to the home screen. Open the link in Safari on an iPhone, or in Chrome on Android, and try again.
- It says it's already installed
- Then it's on the phone already. Look for the CarrierNote icon on your home screen, or search the phone for it. Some browsers offer to open the app instead of adding it again.
- The phone says its storage is full
- The app needs a little free space for itself and for any notes waiting for signal. Delete something you don't need, such as old videos, and try again.
- How do I remove it?
- Press and hold the icon and remove it, as you would any other app. Your account and every note already uploaded stay in CarrierNote. Check it has uploaded everything first, because a note still waiting for signal is only on the phone.

Why it isn't in the App Store
You won’t find it in the App Store, and that’s the point. The mobile app is CarrierNote itself, the same one the office signs in to on a computer, saved to the phone with its own icon. There’s nothing to download and nothing to update, so nobody waits for a store to approve a new version and nobody on the team has to remember to update it.
Mobile app questions
- Is the mobile app free?
- Yes. Free means the app, and Pilot still covers 10 waste movements a calendar month, whether you record them on a phone or a computer.
- Do I need an app store account?
- No. There's no store involved, so there's no store account to set up. You install it from a link.
- Which phones does it work on?
- A recent iPhone or Android phone. The steps above show the taps for each.
- Does it work without signal?
- It works with no signal, and syncs when you're back.
