Install the mobile app

The taps for an iPhone and for an Android phone, and what to expect once the app is on the phone. Open this page on the phone you're setting up and follow along.

Before you start

What you're doing

Add to Home Screen is a button in your phone’s browser menu that puts a website on your home screen as its own icon. The CarrierNote mobile app is CarrierNote itself, saved to the phone that way. There’s nothing to download from an app store and no store account to set up.

The mobile app is free on every plan, including Pilot. Free means the app, so Pilot still covers 10 waste movements a calendar month, whether you record them on a phone or a computer.

You need a recent iPhone or Android phone with signal while you set it up, and you do it once on each phone. Jump to the steps for an iPhone or an Android phone.

iPhone

Install it on an iPhone

These steps are for Safari, the browser that comes with an iPhone. Other iPhone browsers can add it too, from their own Share menu.

  1. Open CarrierNote in Safari. If the link opened inside another app, such as your email, use that app's option to open it in the browser first.
  2. Open the Share menu. If you can’t see the Share button, it’s in the browser menu. Tap the three dots in the corner of the screen, then Share.
  3. Tap View More, then Add to Home Screen. View More is at the end of the bottom row of the Share menu.
  4. Leave the Open as Web App switch on, and tap Add. The CarrierNote icon appears on your home screen.
  5. From now on, open it from the icon rather than from Safari. It opens full screen, like any other app. Sign in there if it asks you to.
Android

Install it on an Android phone

These steps are for Chrome. Samsung Internet and Firefox can add it too, though the option sits in a different place and may be worded differently.

  1. Open CarrierNote in Chrome. If the link opened inside another app, such as your email, use that app's option to open it in the browser first.
  2. Tap the three dots, then “Install and create shortcut”. The three dots are Chrome’s menu, at the top right of the screen.
  3. In the panel that slides up from the bottom, tap “Install”.
  4. Tap “Install” again in the “Install app” box. Chrome takes a few seconds to install it.
  5. When the “CarrierNote App installed” message appears at the top of the screen, tap it. The app opens full screen. Sign in there if it asks you to.
Once it's on the phone

What to expect from the app

It works with no signal. A new waste transfer note made with no signal is saved on the phone with its photos, and sends itself the next time you open the app with signal. Until then it carries a temporary number starting WTN-TEMP-, and the app tells you its proper number when it lands. Changing a note that’s already been sent needs signal.

It updates itself. When a new version is ready, a line at the top of the app says so. Save anything you’re part-way through, then tap Reload.

Everything is in the same account. The app is the same CarrierNote the office uses on a computer, so a note made on the phone is there for the office as soon as it’s sent.

Stuck?

If it doesn't go to plan

Fixing mobile app problems covers a missing Add to Home Screen button and how to remove the app. The mobile app page has the same steps with a tab for each phone, and our blog post on putting CarrierNote on your phone explains why it isn’t in the App Store.

Start on the free plan

CarrierNote is on the GOV.UK software provider list, connected to DEFRA's Digital Waste Tracking service. Receiving sites are in scope from October 2026 and carriers from October 2027, and you can be recording to DEFRA's standard from your first load, whenever you start.
