Fixing mobile app problems
The snags people hit putting the mobile app on a phone, and what to do about each one.
Find your problem
Add to Home Screen is a button in your phone's browser menu that puts a website on your home screen as its own icon. Most install problems come down to not finding it.
There's no Add to Home Screen option
On an iPhone, it’s inside Safari’s Share menu, under View More. View More is at the end of the bottom row of the Share menu. If you can’t see the Share button at all, tap the three dots in the corner of the screen, then Share.
On Android, Chrome calls it “Install and create shortcut”, and it’s in the menu behind the three dots at the top right of the screen. Other browsers may word it differently.
If it isn’t in either place, the link has probably opened inside another app’s browser. The next answer covers that.
The link opened inside another app
Email apps and messaging apps often open a link in a browser of their own, and those browsers usually can’t add anything to the home screen. Use that app’s option to open the link in the browser instead. If you can’t find one, copy the link and paste it into the browser yourself.
On an iPhone, use Safari for the install. Other iPhone browsers can add it too, from their own Share menu, but our steps are written for Safari. On Android, our steps are written for Chrome.
On an iPhone, it opens with Safari's address bar showing
The Open as Web App switch was probably off when the icon was added, so the icon opens a Safari page instead of the app. Press and hold the icon, remove it, and add it again, leaving the Open as Web App switch on before you tap Add.
It says it's already installed, or I can't find the icon
Then it’s on the phone already. Look for the CarrierNote icon on your home screen, or search the phone for it. On Android it can land in your list of apps rather than on the home screen. Some browsers offer to open the app instead of adding it again.
The phone says its storage is full
The app needs a little free space for itself and for any notes waiting for signal. Delete something you don’t need, such as old videos, and try again.
Notes are waiting to sync
A note made with no signal is saved on the phone, and a line at the top of the app counts the ones waiting to sync. Until they send they carry a temporary number starting WTN-TEMP-. They send themselves the next time you open the app with signal, and the app tells you the proper number each one was given.
Sometimes a note can’t be filed when it sends, for example because your plan’s movements for the month are used up. The line at the top says so and keeps the note on the phone, so nothing is lost. Sort out the reason it gives, then tap Try sending it again.
While anything is waiting, don’t sign out and don’t remove the app. A note that hasn’t sent is only on that phone, and signing out clears it. Open the app somewhere with signal and wait for the line at the top to go.
It says a newer version is ready
The app updates itself, and it asks before it swaps the new version in, so nobody loses a note they’re halfway through. Save anything you’re part-way through, then tap Reload in the line at the top of the app.
How do I remove it?
Press and hold the icon and remove it, as you would any other app. Your account and every note already sent stay in CarrierNote, so you can install it again later and sign in where you left off.
Check nothing is waiting to sync first. A note still waiting for signal is only on the phone, and removing the app can lose it.
Where to go next
The install guide has the taps for both phones, one step at a time. The mobile app page has the same steps with a tab for each phone, and our blog post on putting CarrierNote on your phone explains how it works with no signal.
If none of that fixes it, the support page says how to reach us. Tell us which phone and which browser you’re using, and what you see on the screen.
